Summer backyard birthday party ideas for Aussie kids

A backyard party is the cheapest, easiest way to celebrate a summer birthday, as long as you plan around the heat. Here's how to keep 8 to 15 kids happy, cool and fed without spending your whole weekend on it.

Pick the right time of day

  • Go early (9 to 11am) or late afternoon (4 to 6pm). Avoid the middle of the day when the sun is strongest.
  • Keep it to about two hours. For under-6s, 90 minutes is plenty.
  • Put "bring a hat, swimmers, a towel and a change of clothes" on the invitation.

Set up a shade zone first

Before decorations, sort shade: a gazebo, a shade sail or a big tree for the food table and a quiet spot. Keep sunscreen and a water jug with cups at the entrance. Remember Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek, Slide.

Water games that need almost no gear

  1. Sponge relay. Two buckets per team; soak a sponge, run, squeeze, repeat. First team to the line wins.
  2. Sprinkler limbo. A garden sprinkler plus a pool noodle for the limbo bar.
  3. Water balloon toss. Pairs step back after every catch. Pick up every bit of balloon afterwards.
  4. Ice treasure hunt. Freeze small toys in containers the night before; kids use water squirters to free them.
  5. Duck, duck, splash. Duck, duck, goose with a cup of water instead of a tap.

Quieter options for when they need a break: chalk drawing in the shade, bubble wands, or a colouring station (our free printables work well here).

Food that won't melt or spoil

  • Watermelon wedges, frozen grapes, fruit skewers.
  • Sandwich wraps and sushi rolls kept in an esky until serving.
  • Ice blocks or icy poles instead of a big cream cake (or serve the cake straight from the fridge, right at the end).
  • Skip chocolate decorations and anything with cream that sits out for long.
  • Keep food out for no more than about two hours and put leftovers back in the fridge or esky.
